Named Hydnum imbricatus by Linnaeus

If it looks like a snake… sometimes it’s just a mushroom!

This one gave me a real scare when I first saw it along the trail, but most of these do look like normal mushrooms. This is a “tooth fungus” (in the Basidiomycetes)—no gills or pores, but spores are borne in tooth-like projections under the cap (see leftmost lobe of this cluster).
