Soredia

Singular soredium, adjective soredate

Powdery granules of fungal hyphae containing a few photobiont cells. Each tiny granule can grown a new lichen is it breaks off and finds a new home. They can be extremely fine powder (farinose) or more discrete grains (granular or granulose). Sometimes soredia can cover large sections of a lichens thallus. Other times they are contained in discrete structures called soralia. There are even a few species that are nearly entirely soredia.

Soredia featured in my blogpost on Villophora microphyllina. Nearly the entire thallus is covered in soredia.
